How rankings work.
Every rating on this site is a coffee someone logged in the Sipworthy app. Nobody rates a place from the website, and no business can pay to change where it sits.
Where the ratings come from
When you rate a coffee at a café in Sipworthy, or rate a bag of beans you bought, the app adds that rating here — unless you turn sharing off. Only the stars, the drink, the tasting notes you picked and the month are shared. Your notes, photos, prices and the exact day never leave your phone.
Cafés and roasters are the places you choose from Apple Maps, so the same café is one place whoever logs it.
One vote each
A regular who logs fifty flat whites at their local counts once, as the average of their cups — with recent visits counting more than old ones. A coffee counts each person's latest rating of it. A roaster is the average of how each person rated its coffees.
Why the top place isn't always the highest average
A café rated 5 stars by one person isn't yet better than one rated 4.6 by forty. Each place starts close to the average for places like it, and moves towards its own rating as more people agree — as if it began with 5 votes at the average for cafés, or 3 for beans and roasters. The number shown beside a place is the plain average of everyone's votes; the order comes from how confident that average is.
When something is listed
- Cafés, beans and roasters join the rankings once 3 people have rated them.
- A café's ranking for one drink needs 2 people to have rated that drink there.
- Before then a place still has its own page, marked as new.
Keeping it honest
Ratings only come from the real Sipworthy app on a real iPhone or iPad, checked with Apple's App Attest. New contributors count for less until they have been around a while. Sudden bursts of ratings for one place are reviewed, and ratings that aren't genuine are removed.
Claimed pages
A café or roaster can pay to claim its page and add photos, opening hours, a description and contact details, marked as theirs. That is all a claim does. It never changes the rating, the order, or whether a place is listed, and we check each claim before it shows.
Removing your ratings
Turn off sharing in the app's settings, or choose Remove my ratings, and everything you shared is deleted from this site. Deleting a coffee in the app removes its rating too.
